06/01/08 Sports Update

The Red Wings are one win closer – and one win away – from a Stanley Cup title, and the march there has been impressive. Last night it was their stellar defense that gave the Red Wings a 2-1 win, and the Pittsburgh Penguins their first loss at home in the playoffs. Detroit now returns to the Joe up three games to one Monday night for an 8 o’clock drop.

The Kalamazoo Xplosion remain unbeaten all-time at home – but just barely. It took a 25-yard field goal with four seconds remaining by former Bronco Brad Selent to lift the Xplosion over the Miami Valley Silverbacks 46-43 last night at Wings. The Xplosion will close out the regular season next Saturday at home against Fort Wayne and will host a first-round playoff game the week after that – you can catch all the Xplosion football action live on ESPN 1660.

The Tigers got blanked by Seattle Saturday 5-zip – a league-worst ninth shutout this season, three times their total from all of last season. The rubber game gets underway today at 3:50 on your home for Tiger baseball, 590 KZO.

The Cubs picked up another win at home last night, edging the Rockies 5-4. The Cubs are threatening to sweep the four-game series when they take the field this afternoon at 2pm on ESPN 1660.

In women’s track, Danielle Brown broke a 10-year old Western Michigan record in the 400-meter hurdles Friday at the NCAA Mideast Regional Championships, but her record lasted less than 24 hours – until she broke it again! On Friday she posted a time of 57.73, and a day later she clocked in at 57.18. She also beat the Olympic Trials qualifying mark of 57.99 and could be given a chance to qualify for the Olympics. The Broncos tied for 14th place and scored 19 points, the most ever scored by WMU at the NCAA Regional Championships. Western Michigan now has two weeks to prepare for nationals in Des Moines, IA.
