The Tigers kick off a west coast swing! For 1660 The Fan dot com sports, I’m Sean Patrick! The Oakland A’s have been struggling but the Tigers have some hard times playing out west. Larry Long is California Dreamin’!

This trip to the West Coast did not start off well for the Tigers losing to Oakland 7-1. Detroit didn’t score their lone run until the 6th inning on a Laird RBI. Tonight’s game from Oakland comes your way tonight at 9:45 on 590 KZO.

The Cubs fared better in Pittsburgh topping the Pirates 3-1 behind great pitching from Rich Harden and Ryan Theriot’s help at the plate. Cubs and Pirates again tonight at 7:05.

The White Sox took the first of a three game series from the Indians in Cleveland 6-3.

In a move that’s not going to make a lot of fans happy, the Detroit Red Wings have decided not to renew backup goalie Ty Conklin’s contract. It’s not he didn’t play well – they just don’t wanna pay him a LOT more money next season – salary cap an’ all. Your new hero or goat is Jimmy Howard, fresh off four seasons with the Grand Rapids Griffins.

The Western Michigan men’s basketball team released its non-conference schedule Monday. Some highlights for next season include a home bout with Temple December 1st and a road matchup with Illinois of the Big Ten December 13th.

An interesting twist in Isaiah Thomas’s new gig: We told you yesterday how the former Hoosier and Piston, coming off a rough stint as the president and coach of the Knicks, had taken a job as coach of low-profile Florida International. The Associated Press is reporting that when Thomas learned off layoffs and budget cuts at the university, the newly-minted head coach has offered to donate his first-year salary to the school, effectively working for free. Don’t worry too much for Zeke though – the Knicks still owe him about $12 million on the final two years of his contract.

K-Wings Grab Some Accolades

Some honors for the The K-Wings as they gear up for the playoffs – Kalamazoo represents half the IHL All-Rookie Team – Rick Cleaver, Rob Jarvis and Tommy Lange all made the grade. The K-Wings get to the business of winning the Turner Cup tomorrow when they hit the road for game one of their semi-final series with Fort Wayne. The Wings host the Komets for game two at Wings Stadium Saturday at 7:30 with festivities getting underway at 5.

Buckeyes Lose Fiesta Bowl in Final Seconds

It looked like Ohio State may add another bowl title to their list but with 16 seconds left Texas quarterback Colt McCoy threw the game winning touchdown giving the Longhorns a 24-21 Fiesta Bowl victory. The tenth ranked Buckeyes led 21-17 late in the game but could not put the game away and finish the season with a 10 and 3 mark while Texas wraps up the year at 12 and 1.

At Comerica Park the Detroit Tigers are reeling from a 5-2 loss to the Oakland Athletics Wednesday afternoon. The Tigers dropped their 2nd straight to the A’s even with Armando Galarraga on the hill. Tigers Manager Jim Leyland says they only have themselves to blame.

Louis Delmas has been so dominant in the early weeks of the season that the Mid-American Conference has already placed the MAC West Defensive Player Of The Week award on his back after week 2. Delmas stopped into the Dan Cash Show Wednesday evening…he says the defense has a lot to play for.

This week the Broncos are headed to a hostile environment in Moscow, Idaho but last week the Broncos had a big student section at Waldo last Saturday. Delmas says the energy of the crowd pumps the team up.

The Drama Continues For Tatum Bell

Tatum Bell is no longer a Lion and Rudi Johnson’s debut was less than eventful Sunday against the Falcons.

That however doesn’t mean the two are out of the news…the Detroit Free Press is reporting that the women Bell dropped Johnson’s bags off with after allegedly taking them from the Lions Allen Park facility last week refuses to say where the contents of Johnson’s bag reside.

Her story also directly contradicts former Lions defensive lineman Victor Degrate…whom Bell said was the player that asked him to pick up his bags from the Lions facility. Bell picked up Johnson’s instead and the soap opera continues.

The Oakland Athletics jumped to a 5-0 lead and hung on for a 5-2 victory Wednesday afternoon at Comerica Park. Jack Cust hit his 28th homerun of the season and Ryan Sweeney added his 5th in the Oakland win.

Armando Galarraga took his 6th loss of the season for the Tigers allowing 5 earned runs in the loss. Up next the Tigers take Thursday off before heading to Chicago for the start of a 3-game-series with the White Sox.

In Kalamazoo Bill Cubit held his Tuesday Press Conference this morning at the Radisson Plaza Hotel. Last week Bronco Safety Louis Delmas grabbed an interception, recovered a fumble and recorded 10 tackles. Headed into Idaho Cubit says Delmas is playing great football.

Delmas was named the MAC West Defensive Player Of The Week and will be featured on “The Dan Cash Show” at 6 Wednesday. Defensive End Zach Davidson joined Cubit for the Press Conference saying it doesn’t matter where the Broncos play…they’ll be ready.

The Western Michigan Broncos head to Moscow Idaho this Saturday to take on the University of Idaho Vandals. It’s a Vandals team that beat Idaho State last weekend for their first win after 11 straight losses dating back to week 3 of the 2007 season.

Vandals Head Coach Robb Akey says it was tough to see his players go through that. The Vandals 11th straight loss came at the hands of an Arizona team that beat them 70-0 to open the 2008 season.

The Broncos enter the Kibbie Dome Saturday with kickoff set for 5…against an Idaho team finally searching for it’s 2nd straight win.

On Monday Night Football’s 2008 debut the Green Bay Packers didn’t need Brett Favre as Kalamazoo native Greg Jennings caught 5 passes for 91 yards from first-year-starting quarterback Aaron Rodgers. Rodgers went 18-22 throwing for 178-yards in the win.

The Packers now head to Detroit for a showdown with the Lions at Ford Field Sunday.

In Indianapolis the Chicago Bears surprised the Colts with a dominant 29-13 victory Sunday night. Kyle Orton led the Bears with 150 yards passing and no interceptions while Rookie Matt Forte rushed for 123-yards in his NFL debut.

Broncos Hold On For 29-26 Victory

The Western Michigan Broncos ran wild in the 2nd half after turning the ball over early and often against the Northern Illinois Huskies Saturday evening.

An announced crowd of 26,262 for CommUniversity night at Waldo Stadium witnessed a Bronco team that may have gelled perfectly late in the game.

In the 3rd quarter the Huskies took a 19-14 lead before the Broncos outscored them 15-7 to secure the win after Jamarko Simmons fielded an on-side kick with under 40 seconds to play.

Brandon West led the Broncos on the ground with 175 yards on 25 carries while Jamarko Simmons was back in form grabbing 8 passes for 102 yards.

Up next the Broncos head to Idaho next Saturday.

The University of Michigan will take on Miami this weekend at the Big House in game 2 of the Rich Rodriguez era. Rodriguez is expected to juggle the lineup a bit…providing more speed as well as experience when Running Back Kevin Grady returns to the Wolverines lineup Saturday.

Grady had been suspended earlier in the summer after being arrested for driving with a .281 blood-alcohol level. Rodriguez told reporters Wednesday that Grady has earned the right to play.

In Chicago the Cubs have fallen into a full-fledged losing streak dropping their 5th straight 4-0 to the Houston Astros. The Astros finished a sweep of the Cubs with Randy Wolf throwing a 6-hit complete game gem allowing no runs in the win.

Ryan Dempster allowed 3 runs in 7 innings on the way to his 6th loss of the season for the Cubs. The Cubs regroup tonight before heading to Cincinnati Friday.

Triple-A call-up Mike Hessman powered the Detroit Tigers to their first win in 3 games 9-6 over the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim Wednesday.

Curtis Granderson then tripled in the 9th after a Mark Teixeira single gave the Angels a 6-5 lead tieing the game at 6…before Polanco singled in yet another run to give the Tigers the lead for good.

Mike Hessman added his own insurance policy in the 8th on a 2-run-homerun to give the Tigers the 9-6 win. The win sends the Tigers into a 12:45 rubber game with the Angels this afternoon. Hear the game live on 590 KZO.

If it’s difficult for you to understand the headline here’s the explanation. Profootballtalk.com is reporting that after Tatum Bell was released from the Detroit Lions Tuesday, Bell took new Running Back Rudi Johnson’s bags to a former friends home…asking her to hold onto them for a while.

When Johnson returned his bags were missing so Lions President Matt Millen checked surveillance cameras. Sure enough…Bell was seen picking up the bags and walking away. The Lions haven’t commented on the story.

In Chicago the Cubs continued their mini-slide falling 9-7 to the Houston Astros in 11-innings at Wrigley Field. In the 11th Geoff Blum hit a 2-run-homer to give the Astros the win.

The Cubs still lead the Milwaukee Brewers by 4-and-a-half games heading into the finale with the Astros tonight at 8:05.

It was yet another loss for an underachieving Detroit Tigers team Tuesday against the Los Angeles Angels. In the top of the 9th Mark Teixeira’s sacrifice fly scored Chone Figgins to give the Angels a 5-4 win.

Miguel Cabrera and Edgar Renteria were the Tigers bright spots…with each collecting 3 hits on the night. Cabrera hit a homerun and a double in the process.

For the first time since Rodriguez was traded to the New York Yankees last month he came back to Comerica Park Monday. Pudge was victorious in his return going 2-for-5 in a 13-9 Yankees win. Rodriguez says the ovation he received was something special.

The Tigers trailed 11-2 heading into the 4th inning when they scored 6 runs to get within 11-8. Than it was Kalamazoo native Derek Jeter driving in 2 with an RBI Single.

It was a fun couple of days in Nebraska but now the focus turns to the home opener against Northern Illinois. The Broncos come in with a respectable performance against a pumped Nebraska team while the Huskies are 0-1 following a close loss to a bad Minnesota team.

Originally the Cornhuskers were confused by Hiller running around and sending audibles...so much so that they took a timeout. Than it appeared to be the Broncos confusion that led to the interception after Hiller screamed at Brandon West to get to the right instead of his left.

Say what you want about the Broncos first half...and I have, but this time is certainly continuing to play in the 2nd half. At the moment this game can be used as a confidence builder.

Last season that couldn't be said for a Broncos team that was punished by West Virginia and Missouri. It's not a win...but right now...it's a moral victory. However 14:43 remaining in a long time for the Huskers to push points across the board.

The first half is illustrated in 2 ways to me. One being that the Nebraska Cornhuskers are simply a better football team than the Western Michigan Broncos. With that being said I also want to make it clear that in a game that you aren't expected to win...you have to take chances.

The Broncos only try was a failed flee flicker that slipped out of the hands of Tim Hiller when he tried to let it fly. This game is currently in blowout mode at 34-10 but let's just say the Broncos can get back in it.

The beginning of the 2nd half must begin with a Bronco touchdown. That is honestly only to save from embaressment. If they don't score...it's sayonara "they held it tight" and hello 70-17.

The fans in this stadium...are the loudest I have ever heard in my life.
